Many years ago, in the late 50’s, the Lake Association searched for a symbol to start a summer season. On one special Memorial Day, boats gathered at the Second Dam between the boat ramp and Carroll’s beach, and the Priest at St. Mathew’s blessed all the boats present.
This was following a tradition from many centuries before:
The Blessing of the Fleet is a tradition that began centuries ago in Mediterranean fishing communities. The practice began predominantly Catholic, but is now practiced by all Christians as a blessing from the local priest and pastors that is meant to ensure a safe and bountiful season.
Following the blessing at that Memorial Day event, a spontaneous parade followed, which took a slow ride around the lake and greeted the camp owners and guests on shore with well wishes for a safe and bountiful season.
Last night the Sokokis Lake Community celebrated a modified tradition from that Memorial Day Event and thanking all who contributed to making so many wonderful memorials of the 2022 summer season and informally wished blessing for a safe, healthy, and memorable winter season filled with more memories.
The Board of the Sokokis Lake Association remembers well this incredible season we have had the pleasure to enjoy and participate in, and we want to express our appreciation for our magnificent Labor Day week-end traditions, and thank all of you who help make so many great memories.
