Sokokis has a large variety of native plants, below and above the water line. As annoying as that may be to some, they are important to the ecological balance of the lake by providing oxygen, food, habitat and shelter to other aquatic life. They also help stabilize the shore and slow the flow of sediments and pollutants.
Non-natives, on the other hand, can be extremely destructive to the lake environment by out-competing native species — they have no natural predators — and can aggressively take over a lake. Impacts include the loss of native plant and animal communities, reduced property values, impaired fishing and degraded recreational use.
